Ounila valley

From Telouet to Ait Benhaddou

Ounila valley

The Ounila Valley, a narrow river flowing from the High Atlas downs to Ait Ben Haddou until it joins the Imini River, boasts numerous villages, kasbahs, green gardens, and colorful geology. Inhabited by the hospitable Amazigh people, the region offers a secondary route, P1506, linking Ait Ben Haddou to Tizi-n-Tichka pass. While longer than the main route N9, P1506 rewards travelers with breathtaking views and access to hidden landmarks of the High Atlas Mountains.

Driving through this small route, envision the historical caravans of camels traveling from sub-Saharan cities to Marrakech. Ounila Valley served as a vital passageway for these caravans transporting Saharan merchandise and salt over weeks.

Main attractions of Ounila Valley:

  • Ait Ben Haddou
  • Tamdaght Kasbah
  • Kasbah d’Anemiter (Jacques Majorelle)
  • Telouet Kasbah

How to get to Ounila ?

Option 1: Arrange a day trip through a travel agency, visiting Ait Ben Haddou and continuing through Ounila Valley, returning via Road N9.

Option 2: Visit Ounila Valley on your way to/from Marrakech, considering an overnight stay in one of the charming guesthouses along the valley.

Option 3: Many travel agencies organize daily trips from Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou, including a visit to Ounila Valley.

*Public transport, buses, and shared taxis do not use P1506 while traveling from Marrakesh to Ouarzazate; they opt for route N9 due to its faster travel time.
